Loretto High School Virtual Enterprise Takes a Bite Out of the Big Apple
Senior class members of the Loretto High School Virtual Enterprise firm, The Animal Kingdom, Inc. traveled to New York City to attend the Virtual Enterprise International Trade Fair. This year the trade fair was bigger than ever, with over 170 company booths representing schools from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia, California, Illinois, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Romania, Indonesia, South Korea, and Bulgaria. Students in attendance had the priceless experience of networking with each other, marketing their products and services, and competing in different areas of business.
The LHS students were challenged soon after landing in New York to set up their booth for business the next day. Long hours of planning and preparation went into this year’s booth design and sales promotions. On the day of the event, the students practiced their finest sales techniques, processing over $170,000 in sales of pets and pet supplies.
The students were rewarded for the many months of hard work and preparation for the international competitions by receiving the following awards: Gold Award - Catalog Design, Gold Award - Website Design, and Top 10% - Video Commercial. Congratulations to these students on a job well done!
After taking care of business, the LHS group enjoyed the beautiful sites and cuisine of the city. The bright lights and excitement of Times Square, along with famous cheesecake from Juniors, New York style pizza from John’s Pizzeria, and the entertainment in Ellen’s Stardust Diner set the stage for a trip to remember. Riding on the subway and in New York taxis also left a lasting impression on everyone!
A visit to the The Today Show gave the students the opportunity to be seen on television by the folks back home, as well as the chance to meet the hosts of the show and Dr. Oz. The group toured Radio City Music Hall and was able to get a first-hand look at the beautiful theater and learn the fascinating history behind the building. During the tour, the group was able to spend time with one of the Rockettes, Abigail Gatlin, who happens to be a Tennessee native.
Lower Manhattan holds a particularly strong meaning for visitors to New York. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum holds touching tributes throughout the building, as well as historical pieces from Ground Zero. This year’s group spent several hours learning and remembering the events of that day. The newly-opened One World Observatory housed breath-taking views of the city and surrounding states, and was enjoyed by all. A visit to the Financial District would not be complete without a picture with the “Wall Street Bull” while touring Wall Street.
This year’s group chose Wicked for their Broadway show, which continues to be one of the most beloved shows in New York. The beautiful set and outstanding musical numbers from the talented cast made this show one to remember. Other famous New York landmarks visited by the group this year included Central Park, Trump Tower, Tiffany’s, Columbus Circle, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Madame Tussaud’s wax museum, Macy’s, The Empire State Building, Chinatown, and Little Italy.
Traveling to New York this year were students Landon Augustin, Zeb Augustin, Tori Bottoms, Bailey Buttrum, Lauren Coggin, Jessi Diers, Garrett Duplantis, Emily Fisher, Savannah Gambel, Jada Gibbs, Alexis Hughes, Chloe Huntley, Kelby Luffman, and Emma Sanders, along with the LHS Virtual Enterprise instructor, Ms. Mary Pack. Also attending were chaperones LHS Business Teacher, Roberta Niedergeses, and parents Jennifer Augustin, Pat and Wayne Augustin, Kim Bottoms, April Buttrum, Leah Anne Fisher, Amanda Gambel, Falecia Gibbs, Shannon Huntley, Amy and Barry Luffman, and Ann Perry.
The LHS Virtual Enterprise students would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank everyone in the community who supported us this year in order to make this trip possible. Whether it was participating in our fundraisers, giving a donation, or personally mentoring us, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for allowing us to have this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
